How to get into Case Management

Published

I am really interested in Case Management. I took a 10 hour CE because it interested me and I loved it. I left the class and applied to a job and was turned down without an interview..and again and again...I can't get an interview!

I am a Nurse with more than 5 years experience, the jobs I am applying for are for RN Case Managers, so what am I missing? What do I need to do to get my foot in the door and get my first position? Are there classes I can take, workshops I can attend?

What makes a manager want to hire someone with no experience?

Have you thought about home health? The RN is the CM or the team usually consisting of some combo of home health aide, PT, OT, SLP, medical social worker. You will learn all about Medicare regulations, discharge planning, case mix, etc.

Specializes in ED, ICU, MS/MT, PCU, CM, House Sup, Frontline mgr.

OP: Your resume might look like you are only interested in bedside nursing. Change your resume to reflect an ability to be a case manager. You stated that you took a 10-hour CE, so you have some idea of a case manager's focus in various settings. Do you have a BSN? If not, it may be a problem in some areas of the country, where a BSN is preferred or required.

By the way, an effective way to get your foot into the door is a face-to-face talk with a hiring director of a current or former employer. Most in general do not want to spend the money to train a newbie CM. However, most will make exceptions for bedside RNs of the company who know the floors, the MDs, the system, etc. Good luck.

I am in an area that pretty much requires a BSN to get hired into any position, so yes, I have one.
