Hourly Pay

Hello,

I have a potential job opportunity at vidant medical Center, I was wondering if anyone works there, used to work ther, or knows anyone that works there and can tell me a little bit about how the hospital runs? Is it really a busy hospital considering it's in a rural area?

Also I am being offered 22/hr US, is that reasonable considering I haven't got acute care experience or is that just the average pay? I am aware the cost of living in Greenville, NC is quite cheap but is this hourly pay the norm?

I am from Toronto, here I get 32/hr CAD. So you see the difference of a few dollars.

I do have a site visit coming up this month which will probably give me a better perspective of the area but regarding the hourly pay, I am hesitating to bring it up and make it seem my only issue, because it isn't. I'm only curious because I was under the assumption that American nurses get paid the same if not more.

also, what would be appropriate questions to ask them about the pay? I'm not even sure if benefits included or not. The position is full time.

    are you moving to Greenville for a specific reason? That is a big change from Toronto. Oh and the $22 sounds sorta right for a new grad. How much experience do you have?

    I've been working for about a year and a half but in a long term care, not acute setting. So in Greenville because it's a position in the hospital I guess it's considered as new grad, but I'm surprised about the difference in pay...

    $22 seems kind of low considering the nursing shortage. Are they offering any sort of signing bonus incentive? Most places are these days. A way to approach pay without referring to the per hour wage specifically would be to ask them to review the overall compensation package. This would include salary, insurance benefits, bonus incentives, vacation, etc. Hope this helps and good luck!

    When I switched jobs in NC with 2 years experience I was offered 24, so that does seem a little low.

    I actually accepted a position at Vidant (I am a New Grad with no experience). I am moving from Minnesota where nurses generally make $28-30 an hour as a new grad where I will be making $22.40 as a new grad in NC. From my understanding it is about the norm for NC, but not the norm for everywhere else in the US.

    I know that Duke has raised their tuition reimbursement for new hires, there is a moving stipend. After 2 years I think, you get tuition assistance. I just finished my MSN at Duke with lots of help. There are other benefits such as discounts at MANY places. I get a discount on my car insurance, my cell phone, even some of the local car dealerships give a Duke bonus.

    I think UNC has similar benefits.

    I know the pay is not great, but I work weekend option so my differentials are worth it to me. There are raises for climbing clinical ladder and bonuses for certifications.
