Holiday pay... to work or not to work?

Please help me settle a discussion we had at work this week: as a Title38 nurse at the VA, I was always told it makes no difference whether you work the actual day of a holiday or not, you still get paid the same (if you're getting your full 12hrs that is). Some think you get paid more if you actually work the day of. Who's right? We're now wondering if we are getting paid properly...

We get time and a half for actually working on the holiday, we only get an "H" day if we take the day off, which is a normal day's pay (essentially an AL day without using AL time). I'm VISN 4 if that makes a difference. I've never gotten the time and a half for working the day before or after.

It all depends on the number of hours you work during the pay period. If you work 80 hours during the pay period one of the days will be in lieu of holiday and you will receive holiday pay for that day.

At the VA you get paid double time whether or not you work the holiday or not. For example December 25th was my “D” (day off) and the 26th was my “HW”(Holiday worked)so I was paid double time the day after . Now thanksgiving was given off “HE” (holiday excused) paid regular time.
