Hi everybody! Quick question.....The hospital where I am employed just changed our policy regarding holiday pay. We have always received a 50% differential (time and a half) for working holidays (there are six of them that count). The time of holiday pay started at midnight the eve of the holiday and continued until 7am the following day. For instance, those that work on Christmas Eve received holiday pay and those that work Christmas night also received holiday pay for their 12 hour shift. Our policy changed and now we only receive holiday pay beginning at midnight the eve of until midnight the night of. Now when we work Christmas night we will only receive holiday pay from 7pm until 12am. I was wondering, how do other establishments pay for their holidays? Due to a lot of negative feedback, our human resources is reviewing it and letting us know if there will be any changes which she doubts. Any feedback would help for suggestions. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's what we do: On any holiday, Christmas included, one gets holiday pay for the 24 hour period starting at MN the night before and ending @ MN the night of. So, if I work 11-7 Christmas Eve, I get time and a half from midnight to 7, and if I work 7-3 I get time and a half for the whole shift, as does 3-11. I guess ours is like your new policy. But then, we get eleven of those paid holidays per year, so it seems pretty generous. Plus with us, if you work a holiday you get an extra paid day off in addition to the T+1/2, and if you don't happen to work the holiday you get paid for it anyway at straight time. But I can see why people don't like the change at your facility, especially if there are a lot of people who do 12 hour shifts (which my employer doesn't offer), which are usually 7 to 7. The new policy seems discriminatory against the ones who work twelves.

At least you get some sort of holiday pay! I work at a VERY well known hospital, and we don't get anything for working holidays...no time and a half, no "extra" PTO time...NOTHING!

I hear ya sister. I work for a BIG hospital corporation and we get zip on holidays. Occasionally they'll offer $6.00/hr bonus for signing up to work Thanksgiving or Christmas ahead of time. Big deal. It sucks.
