Hiring Wait Time

Hi! I'm planning on moving across the country to Portland, OR next year. My biggest question is, how far out do hospitals usually hire nurses? I'd like to have a job secured before I pack up all my things and move to a brand new city - I won't be able to afford living there long without a job! Will they guarantee a job a few months in advance?

Any insight?

Having moved a lot it has been my experience that I don't get real offers until I have a local address.

Wouldn't hurt to speak with HR to get an idea.

Busy season will increase the need. Slower season will do the opposite.

Many agencies offer permanent placement around the country. Not sure how the market in that area is.

I would think around 30 days but that's my experience from another state. Interview process, background check, drug screen, the usual. Background alone was three weeks and I've been at the same address forever and the same state my whole life.

I've managed to have a job lined up about a month or so before several of my moves (my husband was in the military). You will need time to get your license in the state you are moving to and complete all of their pre-employment screening (drug test, background check, etc). Just be up front and honest with them. When you apply, include a cover letter that explains you are relocating to the area.
