HELP! Waitlisted

Today I finally decided to check my email looking for anything from the school in which I applied to. Nothing in my inbox. I never really check my spam box but I did and there it is...a email from the school dated a week ago. The email I have been waiting for right!?!! Well wrong the email I received states that I have been placed on the waiting list for the 2014 august-december semester and that the dean of the department will make decisions on acceptance from the waiting list. Now of course I'm freaking out and over thinking it all. Only thing I see is I didn't get in for the semester. I need some help to get a clear picture of this. What does this mean? Could it be I have to wait until the 2015 spring semester? Are they saying anyone accepted will be chosen from the waiting list? Maybe there were so many applicants! I have waited so long to get in, it would kill me to have to wait out another semester. I have contacted the school but no one can seem to answer my questions. Has this happened to any of u guys? I'm totally freaking out over what may be nothing at all. Help anyone???
