Help

I am currently living in South Carolina. I am a registered nurse and I'm going to transfer my license to California. Does this mean that I will lose my license in South Carolina or can I work in both states?

    I'm in South Carolina but I don't know without going to the board of nursing site to look it up. South Carolina license is multi state but don't know if California is one of those states.

    California is not a compact state.

    You don't "transfer" your license. One can maintain dozens of licenses if all the varied requirements (CE's, fees, etc) are kept up.

    Nursing licenses are not transferred from state to state; you must obtain a license by endorsement in the new state where you want to work. Visit the California Board of Registered Nursing's website and carefully read the instructions on how to obtain a California RN license by endorsement. Start the application process several months before you relocate, because the CA BRN is famously slow.

    Once you receive the CA RN license, you will also have a SC RN license. You can choose to maintain the SC RN license by paying the appropriate renewal fees. You also have the option of allowing your SC RN license to lapse.
