Help!

I don't have an answer for you, for what I know here in the US you have unlimited number of time you can sit for the NCLEX.

Try to post your question in the Foreign/International nurse forum, hopefully they will be able to answer your question there... Has your friend contacted his nursing school? They might be able to help him.

Actually this is not correct. There are only about three states that have unlimited attempts. Most have three and then they require either special review before one can sit for the exam again, or even have to repeat nursing school for some.

CA and NY are two that permit unlimited testing.

He went to one of the best university , University of Ottawa Canada. If you want, you can go to www.uottawa.ca, and you can have an idea. After four years of study, and received a diploma, I can't beleive either the Board can do that. As you said, he has to contact them again.

They are actually quite strict with the testing in Canada, and only give three tries for the exam. Any nursing board has the right to put in place what they want for standards for the nurses for that province.

He is going to need to contact them, but more than likely he is going to have to complete at least part of his training again, if not all, before they will permit him to sit for the exam.

Any foreign nurse that goes to Canada has only the three attempts or then they get their visa cancelled and they have to leave the country.

The NCLEX exam is the licensing exam for the US, it is not used for Canada.

Canada uses only the CRNE exam.

Since this thread is specific to the CRNE exam, will move this thread to the Canadian forum where it will be more appropriate and you can get responses from the Canadian nurses. Will also edit the title to reflect the CRNE exam.

leyou, I suspect that your friend will have to retake at least part of his education in order to be reconsidered for the CRNE. CNA is pretty clear that there will be three chances and three chances only to be successful in writing it. It is a bit of a surprise and concern that he was educated at the U of O and has failed the exam three times. Might there be some language difficulties associated with this? I only ask this because your English usage is a little unusual.

As Suzanne4 has said, and as I have reiterated many other times on this board, the Colleges of Nursing in Canada (and the Boards of Nursing in the US as well) are responsible for the safe, competent and ethical nursing care provided in their jurisdictions. They have the authority and the responsibility to determine standards of nursing education and care and what is required to meet those standards. It is about as fair a process as it can be. These are the requirements that ALL nurses must meet regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or where they were educated, and the exam is administered and graded without any kind of identifying information other than a ID number that is later matched back to the person who wrote. One either passes or one doesn't. Three tries should be enough to measure a person's kowlegde base, and since the exams are continually changed and updated, they give a pretty accurate picture of what one knows and doesn't know. Since the majority of people who write the CRNE pass it on their first attempt, I'd say that reflects a fair evaluation.

Your friend will have to contact the College of Nurses of Ontario (http://www.cno.org) and seek their ruling on what steps are in order now.
