What are some advantages & disadvantages of having the state nurses' association serve as the bargaining agent for the state's nurses? Please ALL opinions wanted & welcomed. I don't know much about this.

Well, I'm in Canada and our Nurses Association is not at all associated with our Union/bargaining unit. I think that this is important because nurses in management positions are in the association and NOT in the union. I think that would be a conflict of interest if they were involved in the bargaining process. Not sure if this is the case where you are???

state association members who are in managment are not part of staff barganing unit.

I am a member of the CNA (CA Nurses Assoc), a union made up of staff RN's, not managers. I have negotiated 4 contracts @ 2 diff hospitals w/ a CNA negotiator's help. The negotiators have always been on the side of us nurses, & have done a great job. The CNA is a very strong pro-nurse unon. I know that there are many state assoc. who are not pro nurse & who are much weaker.
