Help with RN Programs in Northern IL

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi All,

I'm new to this site. Just moved back to the North suburbs of Chicago (Lake County), and am desperately looking for a nights and weekends nursing program. Any suggestions? It appears all programs in this area are daytime. I'm really bummed as I had already gained acceptance to an on-line nursing program in Ohio (clinicals on weekends), and had to withdraw due to transferring. I have all prerequisites complete and just have nursing courses remaining. I also have a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hey there!!! Welcome to the site!!! Actually, I live and work in Lake County and I go to school here as well....at night! College of Lake County has a night course (not weekend, but nights). www.clcillinois.edu is their website. You might want to talk to a counselor quickly though - classes begin the 20th. The last test before the cutoff is August 28 and I just signed up on Tuesday and there were only 5 spots left to take the test.

I'd at least sign on to their website and register for a Student ID if you haven't already...that'll get you going.

Ok, making an Edit. What was your score for the NLN (or is that the one you took?)...you, of course, don't have to answer! To get into this nursing program at CLC, the NLN test is required (and usually mid to upper 80% is the cutoff). Last pre-entrance exam for Spring '08 cutoff is August 28, so you'll need to move quickly if you want a spot on that last night! If you already took the NLN, you'll have to make sure they get those scores to CLC and you'll also have to fill out an application...cutoff is September 5 for Spring. Also, find out if there are any classes that you may still need to take other than Nursing...some may not transfer.

Let me know if you need any help! Good luck!

Also wanted to add that there is an informational meeting you must attend. I believe they are the first Tuesday of every month (time depends on the month). Talk to the counselor and they should be able to help you.

Wow! Thanks for all the info! I actually called CLC this morning, and found out about the night program. I applied to the school this morning, requested my transcripts be sent, and am going to see a counselor on Monday afternoon. I have not taken the NLN test, but did take a similar test called the NET in Columbus, OH, and scored very well! Hopefully I can do it again here. I don't think I'll be able to get everything done by September 5th, so I may have to settle for Fall 2008, but if I can get it done I will. I am also planning on going to the information session on September 4th. If transfer credit goes well, I should have all my prerequisites complete. I have a BA from NIU, and I have all the sciences from a community college in OH. I should just have the Nursing classes left if all goes well.

Thanks again for the info, it was very helpful. Do you like CLC, are the counselors and staff helpful? Is it easy to manuever through registration and such? Just wondering. Thanks again for the Info!

So far, so good!!! I am not taking Nursing classes just yet, but all of my other classes have been great. Anytime I need to speak with a counselor about something, they have been very helpful. Hopefully you'll be able to get everything done by September 5 (but you'll need to take the NLN as well). I'm hoping to start in the Spring and I work full-time through the day, so I too will be taking night classes.

I wonder how long it takes to get your transcript to CLC? Well, if you are interested in taking the test, you can always call the testing center too and they can tell you how many seats are still available for that test, if any. I'll be taking it again just to try to improve on the 85% I got...too close to the cutoff for comfort!

Best of luck to you and again, welcome to the board!! Looking forward to seeing you around!

make sure your other classes match up to clc's for acceptance of transfer. multicultural communications is required too and i'm sure it's specific to clc's wants. check the following: a & p, biology, chemistry, sociology, psychology, microbiology. i've known people to transfer from out of state only to have to retake something.

Thanks for the specific course listing. I've been reviewing them on CLC's site all day, and you are correct. It looks like I will have to take Intercultural Communications and Microbiology. All others seem okay, thank goodness! Retaking Micro is bad enough!! Thanks again for the insights.
