Ok, so I started working for the VA in September, I applied for a position as a nurse manager on the mental health unit. i'm a newer nurse (1 year) with my BSN and currently working on my MSN. I have a telephone interview on Friday! I was told I would be 6 questions that pertains to mental health. What can I do to prepare for this interview? I'm so nervous about it and do not know what to expect! Thank you all for any help you can provide!

You now now what thematic questions you will be asked. I guess you will have some scenario based questions.

You want to take a management role in a mental health unit-- if you're ready for a job like that, you shouldn't need to ask :)

I agree, there will probably be scenarios to test your prioritizing and clinical judgment as well as your management skills. Plus whatever buzzwords the HR folks picked up on their last seminar junket.

Can't "like" this enough.

As a manager you have to have some leadership qualities of course and an understanding of the manager role. But - at that is also important - you need to be able to lead the floor. I hope you have some mental health experience because this is a field with a lot of "special skills". Depending on what kind of mental health floor it is, they probably ask about boundaries, PTSD, perhaps depression, how the law applies in your state to guardianship and psychotropic meds, non medication interventions and so on.
