Hi,
Is a CNA the same thing as a PSW? My fiance(wife) is going to college for a PSW in Canada. I on the other hand am going to become a CNA in NY. I wanted to know because I would like to get a work visa once I complete my CNA training so that I could work in Canada. I really need help with this!
Thanks alot!

Sorry, but can you explain what the initials PSW stand for...that's a new one for me.

PSA -- Personal Support Worker.
I know they are issued a certificate upon course completion but are not regulated by the government here. I think most employers are now asking for an educational certificate of some kind now, as most no longer do on the job training for the NAs. Most are trained in vitals, applying topicals and passing prepacked pills for the home setting, but in facilities they are not permitted to do these duties.

Personal Support Workers in our facility do the hands on nursing care. They don't do meds. Some areas are using PSW's as UCP's- unregulated care providers...a PSW who has taken a medication course but it is not a widely accepted practise. In your CNA course do you have a medication component? If so you may be closer to the LPN here....how long is your program? Good luck....Canada is a great place to work.

The CNA programs are only a few weeks to a few months. They definitely are not similar to the LPN program in either Canada or the US.
If you do get married to someone from Canada, then you will be able to get a visa to work there, once you complete the immigration process.
