Help... Packaging myself for a first job

Here's the scenario: a large Pulmonary group in my area is tied for first place in most interesting job to work in after graduation (December!!!). Currently, they only employ PAs in the practice. According to the majority of the MDs, this is because no NP has ever applied for a job with them. One of the longer-standing MDs said they decided to go with the PA model, but that could have been back in the 1980s when the first PA came on board.

So, my physician mentor told me to put together a package that would incorporate how I would benefit the group and become the pioneer NP for them. I would then train all future NPs as they entered the group's practice.

My question is... where exactly do I start? I have ideas in my head of what my role should be, but where do I go from there? I thought about writing everything down and possibly meeting with a career consultant to help me polish things up. But is this something on paper? Is it just in the way I interview? Or would they want an actual presentation? I'm thinking it's a combination of portfolio (which, btw, I have no idea how to create) and interviews.

I'm so lost and so tired between work, school, and clinicals that it only adds extra stress to my life.

Thanks for your help.

Well congrats on this job and your upcoming graduation! Are there other pulmonary practices in your area that employ NPs? Are there other practices of similar size that employ NPs? I work in a large (15 MD, 3 PAs, 3 FNPs and me - CNS). The big thing in my area at least is the revenue I can generate. What do the PAs do now for the practice and is that in your scope? I would perhaps start with a comparison of the PA versus NP duties (which will probably be identical) and go from there.

After reading this I have to wonder is my NP school the only one that requires a "Roles" class to teach NP students how to do this? We have had to create a marketing sheet with a summary (research based) of how we would benefit a practice, create a marketing product, produce an updated resume, had two whole classes in contract negotiation and how to figure out your salary, productivity, etc. etc.

I would start by gathering research about NPs that shows NPs have equivalent or better outcomes in the care of pulmonary patients. I just read one that showed that ICU patients cared for by an MD/NP team had the same outcomes as patients cared for by an MD/pulmonary fellow team and the patients had LESS reintubations.

My program made us do the same thing.

Wow - that is fantastic that you guys had this class. Wish I had! BTW - a billing and coding class would have been nice too - lol.
