SSN = social security number. Only US Citizens, permanent residents and qualified work visa holders (those with the approval to work in the US not tourist or other visa) are eligible to obtain a social security number. Many states require a SSN to apply for and/or obtain a nursing license such as CA, AZ, and VT; soon all states will as this is a federal requirement that is slowly being implemented in the states as the US government requires that professional licenses only be issued to those with the legal authority to live and work in the US. Right now some states will permit you to apply for licensing and sit for the NCLEX but not issue a license until you provide a valid social security number. Other states will not accept your license application if a social security number is not provided

In order to work you need a Green Card which takes 6 years.

You may want to speak with an employer to petition a work visa for you. Time of waiting depends on the visa type and priority dates prior to yours. Try to google for E visas (employment) or H1b visas.

If you'd be coming via a family based petition, you would need either an EAD (work permit) or a green card to be able to work.
