okay, to make a long story shorter, i applied at a hospital and was offered a job on day shift by the nurse recruiter. when i got to the interview with the nurse manager, she told me the job was on night shift. then she slipped in there that they required a year contract. well, when i asked the recruiter about this, first she said she didn't know what i meant. then later she said oh yeah, well, that floor has had some problems. so i was suspicious and turned the job down and asked for an interview w/ another floor. when i had the interview with the other floor's nurse mgr. the lady was rude to me and said if i decide not to hire you, you can ask the other manager you interviewed with at first, i'm sure she will have something. should i do that? that seems kind of wierd. :confused:i do need a job. i graduate in may. thoughts please.

Is it really a contract?? There is one hospital system where I live that requires you to work the job you are hired for, for one year before you are eligible to transfer. In that system you are allowed to change your FTE but can not leave that floor.

In the system I work at, I have to work for 6 months before I can transfer to a different area. Once I transfer, I have to work another 6 months before I can transfer after that. They have a 6 month rule. The first one I mentioned has a 12 month rule. They are not contracts though... it's just an eligibility thing. It is very costly to orientate people...and it takes a good 3 - 4 months to go through orientation at some places. So basically they want to recoup some of the costs.

But ............do you think I should call her back if the other dept. turns me down? Or is that unprofessional?

Maybe this is just me, but do you really want to work for that manager that was rude to you anyway? You may not be happy there either if the manager isn't a nice person.

If there's any question in your mind about taking the position, don't call. After all the recruiter hasn't been honest with you. Of course she knew there was a contract. A year is a long time to commit to a place you are already weary about.

Are there other hospital options in your area? This sounds pretty hinky, unprofessional, and scary as a place you will have for your first job as a Graduate Nurse.

We have at least half a dozen options in this area and my first concern is getting a good, grounded foundation in my first year or two as a graduate nurse. If I felt like the place I was hiring on was inconsistent or screwing around with me, I would take that as the first hint I needed to run to the NEXT facility...

Good luck!!
