Help!!! LPN wanting more

Published

Specializes in na 1 and 2 training.

Hey Everyone. I passed my NCLEX this past Sept. and I've gotten 3 months of LTC experience under my belt. I don't think I want to become and RN, but I also know LPN jobs are limited in NC. I was wondering if some of you could give me advice. I feel like I would enjoy home health but I know you have to have 6 months to 12 months experience before you can do home health. I'm not sure LTC is what I'm meant to be doing but I know I have to get some experience and I need to be working. Should I start looking for other jobs, go back to school for something else? I'm confused am I the only one that feels this way. I enjoy helping people but I can't see doing LTC for the rest of my career. Please any advice would be helpful. thank you

I will be going to school for lvn i very curious as to what i will be doing on the job why don't u see your self doing it as a long time career would u call it a career??

Specializes in Pediatrics, Emergency, Trauma.

As an LPN for 7 years, I enjoyed working in Rehab Hospitals, Sub Acute, specialty offices, wound care, Home Health, and LTC.

I wanted more within 2 years, when I found the specialties that I worked in (Peds, Rehabilitation) I couldn't get a certification in because I was not an RN. I had an Associates from a CC already, but I returned and cast my net wide and started doing pre-req's to expand my education and practice. Life happens-too long and can be a tear jerker so I'll skip it-I entered a BSN program after five year of being an LPN, finished about year 7 and graduated with my BSN and became licensed within 3 weeks of graduation. I enjoyed building on my practice.

Being an LPN is a career; it could have its "limitations" if your opportunities are, depending on the state. I think LTC is a wonderful place as a LPN; that's the only specialty I know that can give the most flexibility for LPNs-wound care, MDS, charge nurse, restorative...you can build your niche.

It will be up to you to decide if you want to expand your practice, or move on to something else, OP; remember whatever you decide, keep you license and your practice current.

Best wishes.
