Help! I have an ER interview next week!!!

I don't have an answer for you since I am still a student myself. I just wanted to say congratulations and good luck. I hope you get some feed back from a "seasoned interviewee" soon.

In my experience, ED managers usually look for some specific characteristics

1. Intelligence - you can show this by paying close attention to the questions being asked. Don't deviate or go off on tangents when you answer questions... ask for clarification if you don't understand
   
2. Superior understanding of physiology - do a little homework & find out what type of patients are seen in the department. Make sure you are familiar with mechanisms of injury & immediate tx for those injuries.
   
3. Interpersons/communication skills - Make eye contact, be very articulate and clear in your answers. Don't fidget or stammer.
   
4. Professionalism - appearance counts. Review ED nursing standards & expectations prior to the interview. Make sure you have an understanding of the important functions and processes in that area. If you know the federal regs, it will be a plus (EMTALA for sure)
   
5. Integrity - don't lie or stretch the truth about anything. Don't volunteer any of your shortcomings, but answer truthfully if asked - "no, I haven't particiated in any codes, but I understand the importance of ACLS certification and have already begun studying that material".

So...I had the interview but didn't get the job...oh well. I now have an interview in med-surg so I will take my experience with me to my next interview and hopefully will do so fantastic that I will be hired on the spot!
