Help! How do I pass general chem?

My advice to you from someone who took the class 3 times is to get a Tutor. The best way is to email the class and see if someone would like to be your study partner. After my 3 attempt I passed the class with a 88!! You can do It!!!

Khan Academy videos on YouTube, and lots of practice on the equations helped me get a B. I am not a math person at all, so if I can do it, anyone can. Good luck!

Read the chapters and take notes on them. Work out every practice problem in the chapter and at the end. Ask for help. You can use a tutor, but honestly I have found the professor to be best. You would be surprised at how few people go to their teacher during office hours for help. And he/she is the one who is making the exams-- sometimes the professor gives you hints on how to answer their questions or clarify what he/she is really looking for.

Find some classmates that care about their grades as much as you do, and work with them. Not all people in a study group need to be smarter than you, you will learn a lot from explaining things to others.

Do not procrastinate on studying for a test. Study or work problems consistently through out the week. Don't give up and don't run from this. You can get through this!

I think you are psyching chem up to be harder then it really is. It is not easy by any means but really it is a lot if math formulas. That is the bulk of chem imo. The above stated good advice. Study groups are great if you can do em. I took it online accelerated 8 weeks and got a B. Just read your chapters and take notes. Use youtube if you need extra clarification. :)

Like a PP already, utilize your professors office hours. Your professors don't want you to fail! Hopefully they can offer you specifics on what to focus on (i.e. harder topics). Also, my university offers a supplemental instruction program for chem (cost included in tuition). It was a once a week optional "workshop" for the class taught by a grad student where the floor was open to ask questions, help students with practice problems, or topics students were not understanding. See if your school has something like this. A study group is another option... Just make sure the group is serious about studying. Of course, read the chapters and do practice problems. Chem is like math.. You must practice the problems in order to make a good grade. Best of luck!

I would recommend reading the book and highlighting what you think might be test material. Other than that, pay attention in class and be sure to study daily. Study groups and tutors are great sometimes, but they can also be distracting. I've always done better by myself. Anytime I would join study groups I've found that you will spend more time conversating, and less time studying.

I was scared of Chemistry and thought I would get a C if I was lucky. I did all the problems in the book and at the end of the chapters and got an A. It's all about doing the problems over and over. If you don't understand something email the professor. If you get lost in the beginning then it'll make it harder throughout so stay on top of it.
