Hi Everyone!
I'm new here and I don't know where to turn. I am an FNP student at Simmons and the placement coordinators here have a hard time finding clinical sites and preceptors for us that aren't two hours away.
I worked very hard to put my feelers out, and I found a wonderful site only fifteen minutes from my home. The placement coordinators want all information, including leads, to be forwarded to them. After I found this site, the coordinator told me NOT to contact the FNP at the site, and that she would take over. She then told me that the site didn't want me there after all, because the FNP wanted someone with more experience who was in a later semester. The placement coordinator also told me not to contact the site. I then discovered that the coordinator had a hard time placing this student, and gave my placement to her! I guess I'm really naive, and I should have known something wasn't right.
Since then, she has asked for all my leads, and has told me that the only placement she wants for me is in another state, and that I have to get a license in that state. Do I complain to the Dean, or see about transferring schools? I can get another placement myself, but I'm not going to do the placement coordinator's job for her, and hand over every lead I get. I am truly disgusted with this program. Is this what I can expect from other schools?

A few things that I hope will help:
1. This is a very specific post that could very easily be linked right back to you. You may want to change some details/provide less details if your plan is to continue int he program.
2. You found the site but did you actually speak with anyone in the office or was it just a perspective lead? It very well could be that the preceptor was looking for something specific.
3. Are you at Simmons or Nursing@Simmons?
Thank you very much. I found the site, I found the preceptor, I spoke to the preceptor a few times. Preceptor agreed. I notified placement coordinator. Placement coordinator told me to NOT contact the preceptor again, because placement coordinator would take over from there.

Most clinical training sites loath taking NP students due to their extreme lack of preparation and knowledge. This is why it is so hard to find clinical spots for NP students. Your school has made a commitment to students but they are clearly unable to meet that commitment, which is why they are giving clinical spots to students further in the program. Your clinical coordinator is literally desperate for clinical spots and is robbing Peter (you) to pay Paul (the student who got the spot you found). It is a growing problem for NP students to get to their graduation date without having fulfilled the clinical requirements and thus being inegible to take the licensure exam and get a job.
Now ask yourself why PA students never have problems finding clinical training spots. Refer to the first sentence of this post.
Good luck.
Because they pay preceptors $1500-2500 per block per student.

Attorney consult. Unsure if that would help, but it could!
