Help! Final Grade

Please help me figure this out! I need an overall 73% passing grade. My grades are weighted as 10%, 10%, 20%, 10%, 10%, 40% (the final). So far my grades are 72, 80, 72, 88, 76. My question is, what do I need to get on the final which is weighted 40% to get an overall 73% passing grade.

I hope I haven't confused you all.

From looking at the information you provided, you would need a 70 on the final to pass with a 73.6 average. Good luck to you. I wish my school grade was a 73. 80 is passing at my school.

Let me help you, since each test is weighted different, you have to multiple the score by the total possible points. Here is the break down:

Test 1 72% = 7.2 points

Test 2 80% = 8 points

Test 3 72% = 14.4 points

Test 4 88% = 8.8 points

Test 5 76% = 7.6 points

Totals to 46 points or percent, you need a 73% to pass so you need 27.2% more to get to 73%. I played with the numbers and the bottom line is, you need a 68% on you final to pass the class! But go for the 70%. :)

Tentative Test 6 68%, so thats 68% x .40 = 27.2 points

to calculate this:

(.10)(72) + (.10)(80) + (.20)(72) + (.10)(88) + (.10)(76) + (.40)(
x
) = 73

you currently have earned 46% that is possible of the 60% of your grade so far. to get 73% on your final grade you need to get a 67.5% on the final exam. actually, that needs to be rounded up to 68% in order to get to the 73%. then,

(.10)(72) + (.10)(80) + (.20)(72) + (.10)(88) + (.10)(76) + (.40)(68) = 73.2

Also take into consideration what is acceptable when "aiming" for a grade. We have to pass the final exam at 77% or above, regardless of what is only needed to pass the class. We can have straight A's and if we do not score at least a 77% on the final, we flunked the class.

Good luck!!

That's a handy little thing. Thanks

My school's program also uses weighted tests. There are at least a couple of different ways that you can calculate your grade. Just right off hand, I think PurifyMe's method is the most conservative and is also the way that my school apparently does it, now that I've seen all of my final grades.

Since your first test is worth 10% of your final grade, and your score on that test was 72 - what you have to do is just figure out what 72% of that 10% is worth. So in other words, since 72% of 10 is 7.2, then your total, final grade is 7.2% - that is, as far as that first test is concerned.

So if you do that same thing with each of your tests, and then add up all those final percentage numbers, that should give you your present percentage. And basically, whatever you lack from the number 100 is what percentage you need to get a 100, or a 90, or whatever grade or range you're shooting for. Confused yet? :) I think PurifyMe and Daytonite both spelled it out right. There is another way that you could calculate it, but I think this is the safest and more accurate method to stick with.
