help with drug calculation

Published

I'm a first year nursing student. I'm confused about a medication label given on a drug calculation practice test. Can someone please clear this up for me?

The label given in the question reads:

"Diphenhydramine HCL Inj

50mg/ml

1ml in a 2ml Single Dose vial"

The order is for 50mg IV. Does this mean that the vial contains only 1ml or 2ml?

How many milligrams would would be given if I administered the entire vial?

Thanks in advance

Per every 1mL there is 50 mg of medicine. If would all depend on how many mLs in total are listed on the label for that medicine as to how much quantity you have in total.

If the vial contains 2 mL there would be 100 mg of medication in the entire vial so you would not give all 2 mL. You would draw up only 1 mL in your syringe and that would give you your 50 mg needed for your dose. If the vial is a 1 mL vial and it contains 50 mg of med and that is what the order is for then you would draw up the entire 1 mL to get the full 50 mg dose.

Yes the drug concentration is 50mg/ml.

My question is what is the purpose of that statement on the label that says "1ml in a 2ml single dose vial" What does that statement even mean ?

I think that is a distraction. I think it just means there is 1 ml of solution in a 2 mL vial.

I think that is a distraction. I think it just means there is 1 ml of solution in a 2 mL vial. So you would do the D/H formula: 50mg/50mg X 1 ml= 1 mL

Yes the drug concentration is 50mg/ml.

The way I read it is that they are using a 2mL vile to put in 1mL of medication. So you are counting the 1mL of medication only not how much the vile holds.

Throw out what you don't need. 2ml Single Dose vial"

You have an order for 50mg of Diphenhydramine

The label given in the question reads:

"Diphenhydramine HCL Inj 50mg/ml

1ml in a 2ml Single Dose vial"

The order is for 50mg IV. Does this mean that the vial contains only 1ml or 2ml?

The vial states that it contains Diphenhydramine 50mg/ml with 2 mls in the vial....so the vials holds 100mgs of Diphenhydramine TOTAL. (50mgs/ml x 2mls)

You need to give 50mgs...how many mls would this be if there is 50mgs per 1ml.

In the real world....you would not use this vial unless it was dated properly or you gave it earlier and KNOW that it is the correct med in the vial.

It doesn't actually matter what that statement means. Whether there are 1 mL or 2 mL in a single dose or multi dose vial, you still need to administer 50 mg/1 mL.
