Help on decision of NP specialty

Hey Everyone.

I have been thinking about applying to an NP program. However, I am unsure which specialty I want to pursue my career in. I currently have a background of only med-surg nursing experience.

I originally wanted to become a psych NP, but I am afraid that I will be limiting myself too much and will not have options if I do not love it. With that being said, am I able to be a psych practitioner with a family nurse practitioner degree? Most likely not I'm sure, but just a question.

Also, what are some specialties / settings I can do with a family practitioner degree? I love how nursing is so versatile and want to make sure I am still able to explore different fields if I did not like one.

One last question - How much experience is need to apply to an NP school?

Any advice will help. Thank you!!!

    If you want to to psych being an FNP is simply not adequate, except for minor issues.

    Many will take you without any experience. NP school is very easy to get into.

    Yep. I haven't encountered a single person who couldn't find at least one NP program to grant admission.

    There should be programs out there that offer a dual role family and psych NP program. Many people go for family NP first because they see it as the most in demand (you can see all age groups). The truth is that if you get into one specialty and don't like it, you only have to go back another two semesters to add a different certification.
