Question

Help!! ABSN Programs: NYC or WI?

Hi! I have already posted my post on reddit and received only a few comments. I figured I try here to see if more people have any advice/suggestions :)

I am a career changer who is going into nursing and have been accepted into two ABSN programs recently. As per the title, one is in NYC, which is where I am from, and one is in WI.

I am interested in further education such as going to a DNP program maybe in the future. I know you generally need ICU experience for that, so I would like to work in a critical care unit either as a new grad or after a year of working at a different unit.

I have heard about how horrendous the job market is for nurses in NYC, and I am worried about not being to find a job after graduating. I am also worried about potentially not getting an ICU role even after many years at another unit.

Therefore, I am trying to see if going out of state for my ABSN and working there afterwards may align better with my goals, but I also do not have a great idea of how saturated the market is in WI.

If anyone has any insight, I would love to hear it! The NYC is a little cheaper, but I have support systems at both places

Choosing between a hometown program and an out-of-state option involves weighing long-term career mobility against immediate costs. NYC has a high density of nursing graduates, which creates intense competition for specialized units like the ICU. Residencies in major Manhattan hospital systems often see hundreds of applicants for a handful of critical care spots.

Wisconsin offers a different landscape. While the market varies by city, the ratio of new grads to available high-acuity positions is typically more favorable than in the NYC metro area. Securing an ICU spot as a new grad or within the first year is often more realistic in the Midwest. This could accelerate the timeline for a DNP application.

Market Comparison and Education

The cost difference matters, but clinical placement quality is the real tie-breaker. Research which hospitals the Wisconsin program uses for clinical rotations. Strong ties to a Level I trauma center can be a direct pipeline to a job offer before graduation. Many systems in WI actively recruit from local pools to fill critical care gaps.

Compare the financial outlooks by looking at Nursing Salaries: Specialty Pay to see how the lower cost of living in WI stacks up against NYC wages. A lower salary in the Midwest often provides more disposable income than a high salary in NYC after taxes and rent. This financial flexibility helps when preparing for graduate school tuition.

Strategic Considerations

  • Check the NCLEX pass rates for both Best Nursing Schools options to ensure the education quality is comparable.
  • Evaluate the strength of your support system in WI, as an ABSN is notoriously fast-paced and exhausting.
  • Contact the Boards of Nursing for both states to understand the ease of license endorsement if you decide to move back to NYC later.

If the goal is the ICU-to-DNP pipeline, the path of least resistance usually involves going where the demand for labor exceeds the supply of new nurses. NYC requires grit and networking to land a specialty. WI may offer a more direct route to the bedside experience required for advanced practice.

The NYC job market isn't just saturated, it is competitive to the point of exhaustion for new grads. You are fighting thousands of other applicants for every single residency spot at the big systems. If you stay here, be prepared to spend months hunting or settling for a nursing home or clinic just to get your foot in the door.

Getting into an ICU in Manhattan or Brooklyn as a new grad is like winning the lottery. Most units here want two years of med-surg experience before they even look at your resume. If your goal is the DNP track and you need that critical care clock starting now, NYC might actually slow you down.

Wisconsin will likely offer you a much faster path into a specialty. The cost of living difference alone makes the slightly higher tuition a wash. If you have a support system out there, take it. You can always move back to NYC with two years of ICU experience under your belt and have your pick of jobs later.
