Hello Informatics :)

Published

Hello everyone, my name is Kyle and soon I'll be looking to make my way into the world of nursing informatics.

Right now I'm an LPN doing pediatric home health, and those long overnight hours (which amounts to watching children sleep, except when giving meds/treatments or tending to flare-ups in their conditions) leave me with a lot of downtime, which I usually spend writing code for websites, databases, my own personal amusement, etc.

I equally enjoy medicine and programming, and picked nursing over computer engineering because it rarely involves cubicles and 9-5 shifts. I'm a few months from finishing my RN, and was recently made aware that Nursing Informatics exist, and it has me giddy to know that such an up-and-coming field is waiting for me once I finish my ADN. I'm in Tampa and I'm told that the bigger hospitals around here have informatics programs for interested nurses with a couple years of med-surg under their belts, so I'm going to start there and see where this takes me.

So how about those of you who are already involved in the field? What do you like about it, and how much do you enjoy it versus other nursing jobs you've held?

Greetings and Welcome Kyle/burnbeautiful,

I'm sure other's will also respond.

I'll invite you (on your own) to read the numerous posts on this forum to see what other Nursing and Clinical Informatics professionals have written about what it is they like about this specialty vs clinical hands on nursing.

Enjoy!

Hello! I am extremely interested in NI and have been doing a lot of research since I decided that I wanted to get my master's. It seemed like the right fit and I love learning about how technology can better the nursing field. I have moved a bit and gotten experience with charting systems such as EPIC, SIS, Surginet, Care Web and CarePlus.

I am preparing to take the GRE and I've found great schools that have NI programs (UC-Denver, Loyola Univ. - Chicago, Univ. of Maryland, Vanderbilt, Duke, etc.) but my biggest problem is tackling the applications.

I do not know (i.e. have not done a good job of keeping in contact with) Master's prepared nurses who could write me recommendations. I am writing to see if anyone could suggest to me a good way to find master's prepared nurses in the field of informatics to serve as mentors that could go beyond just writing me a letter of recommendation?

Greetings and CONGRATS on your career goals.

I'd encourage you to join and then network with both masters prepared Informatics nurses and other experienced informatics professionals via national and local organizations such as" HIMSS, ANIA-CARING, AMIA and Puget Sound NI, etc.

All the above organizations' websites can be found by doing an Internet search.

Good Luck!

There are many posts here that gives you a good background or idea regarding NIT. You can probably start by reading this post: https://allnurses.com/nursing-informatics/a-day-life-343098.html
