Hello everyone, my name is Kyle and soon I'll be looking to make my way into the world of nursing informatics. Right now I'm an LPN doing pediatric home health, and those long overnight hours (which amounts to watching children sleep, except when giving meds/treatments or tending to flare-ups in their conditions) leave me with a lot of downtime, which I usually spend writing code for websites, databases, my own personal amusement, etc. I equally enjoy medicine and programming, and picked nursing over computer engineering because it rarely involves cubicles and 9-5 shifts. I'm a few months from finishing my RN, and was recently made aware that Nursing Informatics exist, and it has me giddy to know that such an up-and-coming field is waiting for me once I finish my ADN. I'm in Tampa and I'm told that the bigger hospitals around here have informatics programs for interested nurses with a couple years of med-surg under their belts, so I'm going to start there and see where this takes me. So how about those of you who are already involved in the field? What do you like about it, and how much do you enjoy it versus other nursing jobs you've held?
