I'm planning on starting Nursing school very soon and my ultimate goal is to become a NP until just recently heard that this field will be required to have your doctorate instead of your masters. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not.. Thanks

It is a recommendation put out by the AACN in 2004. As of yet, there are no states that require a DNP. Employers may be different, however. It's quite similar to the BSN requirement that ANA recommended back in 1965- there are still zero states that mandate a BSN for licensure. However, there are some employers that mandate a BSN to be eligible to be hired.

CRNAs are the only group that have made an actual deadline but I can't remember if it is 2020 or 2024. Somewhere in there. I earned my DNP for myself, because I live in a NP saturated market and it sets me apart, & because I knew if I didn't go straight through that I would never go back. I'm glad that I completed a terminal degree but curriculums need an overhaul in my opinion. I spent way too much time and effort on papers and a capstone I will never use. I believe the DNP for providers should be more clinically focused.
