Having a hard time finding CNA job in NYC

Hi,

I am having a really hard time finding employment as a Cna in NYC. I live in Brooklyn and I am willing to travel within the 5 boroughs. I have been applying ever since June when I got certified but I have not got one interview unless it was from an agency who tried to take my money. I have not heard from any nursing home , hospital or assisted living facsility. I am becoming very depressed because I am trying to pay to go to nursing school and this dead end retail job can hardly pay my housing bills. If anyone has any advice of job leads or ways I can improve my job search it will be appreciated. Thank you

I work in a school for CNA and HHA's. I would say don't give up. Keep looking for job openings and dropping off your resume. If your not getting any hits have you considered maybe volunteering at a hospital? Some of our CNA's and even LPNs looking for work sometimes decide to volunteer. It's a great way to build professional relationships but also get your foot in the door. Making yourself visible and available will help them to consider you for an opening. Also maybe it's time to contact the school where you recieved your training. Your school has access to many different opportunities and openings. Talk to them about your search see what kind of services they can provide for you as a graduate of their program.

Have you tried home health? Perhaps you aren't getting interviews because you have no experience. Also, how hard do you try to get an interview? If I apply to a job (online), I go to the facility, ask to talk to their hiring manager, take them my résumé (even though they will already have it from the application) and just let em know I wanted to meet them in person and say hi and see the facility.

Be very proactive - because no one else will be for you.

Thank you both for your advice. I will call my counselor at my school and try to get some help from her. Also I did try home health and I am currently waiting on a case. I have been calling the agency for about two weeks and the supervisor said she will call me when there is an open case. I completed the HHA class almost a month ago.

I will start going in to facilities and dropping off my resume. That is a great idea because I'm sure millions of people apply online everyday. Thank u guys

volunteer at a hospital or nursing home on weekends..that way you can get your foot in the door and they may hire you.

Maybe your résumé doesn't look too appealing? Maybe you know someone in HR somewhere who could review it for you or some kind or workforce agency in your city. Make sure you list all your assets, goals, certificates, schooling, volunteer work, etc. you must make yourself as marketable as possible! Good luck and don't give up!

Are you only applying online? I have found that is better to walk in and fill out an application. Sorry you are having so much trouble! Hopefully you'll get some good news soon, don't give up.

Yes I am usually applying online to hospitals , nursing homes and assisted living facility. I am going to do some walk ins and hopefully can speak to someone from human resources. I'm gonna try not to be depressed about it anymore and just work a little harder on my resume and continue to job hunt ! Thanks
