I have to take this class and I have no idea what type of math this is. Is it Algebra, statistics, problem solving or a jumbled mix. I just have no idea what to expect and it's been awhile since I've had math so I'm a little worried. I'm in MD and I'm taking it at CCBC Essex on Saturday'.

Could you check in your school"s catalog and find the course description for this class?

Your college's catalog and sometimes the current class schedules will tell you what this class is. MA111 is the number your college put on this class and it means nothing to the rest of us in the U.S. Your college, Community College of Baltimore County, has a web site where they have a copy of the college catalog that you can download and access to get this information before Saturday.
Why did you sign up for a class without knowing what it was about?
http://www.ccbcmd.edu/ - here is the website for your school
http://www.ccbcmd.edu/catalog.html - this is the link to the college catalog
http://www.ccbcmd.edu/academics/desc/math.html - this will link you into the course descriptions of the math courses at Community College of Baltimore County. I found a description of the course for you. However, you can get this information yourself.
Math 083 is Intermediate Algebra. Sounds like this is what a lot of schools call College Algebra. Also, in looking at the pre-requisites for the class, I am wondering how you were allowed to register for the class unless you have the pre-reqs for it? It sounds like your school has combined math, english and english reading to make this class, or something like that. There seems to be a focus on having also had a class in English Composition before taking this class as well.

Where I attend it's contemporary math, I attempted this course but had a teacher that was brand new, he had taught algebra as a student teacher (from what I remember him saying), needless to say he taught without a clue of what he was doing.
I dropped the class, along with well over half the class...close to all of the class (seriously!!).
What I attended covered statistics.
example.....methods of voting the hows and whys of each voting method...I never knew there was SO much difference in voting systems.
I hope you get a good teacher, one that knows their stuff :)
I went for the college algebra!
Good Luck!
It is one of the prerequisites for the nursing program. I have already read the course description and it really doesn't tell me much as far as what type of math is covered. I simply wanted to know if anyone here has taken a class similar to it and yes I know 111 wouldn't mean much to the rest of the country. Sorry I asked. Math 083 is the module before you are allowed to take any college level math courses and that's offered if you fail the math placement test. I have all my prerequisites for the class, so yes I'm allowed to take the class I did read the catalog before registering. The reading and english classes are prerequisites for foreign students or students w/ reading disabilities.
Thanks anyway.
OK, well since Intermediate Algebra is a pre-req, and it sounds to me like College Algebra, what you will be doing is intermediate algebra, some analytical geometry, and learning some things about probability and statistics. It's a little like pre-Calculus. If you did OK with algebra, you should be able to get through it. I would try to see if any of the math instructors have their syllabus posted on the Internet. If you know the instructor of the class you signed up for, you could try to e-mail him/her and ask what the class subjects encompass. I thought that in navigating the site I saw a list of links to e-mail for the various instructors.
