It was a Sunday evening back in January 2013 when I ran into a former co-worker at a restaurant far away from my home and quite a distance from our old job. What were the odds? It must have been divine intervention. After the usual pleasantries, she started to tell me about this program she found and how wonderful the staff is and how well she had done in the program. She said she was about to graduate. Naturally, I congratulated her. I must admit, I was a bit envious. She was accomplishing all that I had set out to do years earlier without success.
My mother had been trying to encourage me for years to pursue my dream again, but I made it very clear to her that I had given up. So after hearing about this chance meeting in a very unlikely place she suggested that I at least think about trying again.
I did think about it. I called the school that following Tuesday. I was told that classes started the day before. I was a bit disappointed. I asked if I had to wait until the next enrollment in July. The woman on the other end of the phone said that there was a girl at orientation that suddenly could not attend and that I could have her spot. Amazing!!
It took a few more days to get all my paperwork in order and get my physical, but I was officially back in school. I walked into my first class about two weeks behind my peers. I was quite nervous not knowing what to expect. When the teacher walked in she handed out answer sheets for a test. So, there I am; in a new class, no previous preparation for this test, and a pencil and answer sheet. Oh no!! What have I done?
Well, I took that test and I passed it! I knew at that moment that my dream would be realized. I passed every quiz, test, exam, final and HESI. Today was the formal graduation of my class. I was supported by my parents and my two sons. Without their love, support and encouragement, it wouldn't have been possible. There is only one more exam standing between me and my dream job. I will be preparing myself everyday from now until I take the NCLEX-PN. I really am the luckiest girl in the world.
