Got a question

This question doesn't really fit here, actually on this site at all, but ive had trouble finding information. But i was hoping for a response. In the fall ill be starting classes to become a paramedic. Does anyone know what the policy is for male EMT's and such wearing goatees or beards? IVe read forums on this site where doctors and nurses have said they have sported facial hair for years working in the field. Are goatees prohibited in the Paramedic field?

sorry this question doesnt belong here!

thanks for any help

Call a local ambulance company and ask.

It would depend on the specific company employing the medic, but I've never heard of an EMS company completely banning facial hair. Sometimes an issue comes up with very wild/bushy facial hair, especially if it would interfere with the fit of something like a HEPA mask (a special type of protection we use with known/suspected TB patients).

Got an answer!

When you get your paramedic "numbers" there is never an edict that you must shave.

Do you look professional?

Don't know?

I will advise for company specific requirements - check with one.

I do know that fire departments do limit facial hair from the jaw/chin. This is because it is impossible to ensure SCBA seal. So if you are going the fire service route, you'll probably need to shave below the lip/jaw line.

I will say that I have seen some EMS personnel (mostly private service)sport beards (all types) long hair (pony-tails) tat's, pierced everything (including nose ring in one case)! Well, what can I say except - yikes!

If I'd seen this guy on the street I'd be a bit cautious - to see him enter my home or care for me in an acutely ill state - I'd be downright afraid.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but as all of us are judged on appearance - it is unfortunate that his appearance overshadowed any true clinical acumen he possessed.

Good Luck!
