going for my RN

Published

. So, I just recently got my certificates in CNA and PCt and am working for a assisted living. I was going to go for my LPN but a girlfriend suggested I go straight for my RN. So do you think this is a good idea? or should i do the LPN first. I live in MI. i dont know if thats matters

I say go for it girl! If you do one step at a time, you have delays in between. Go for your RN. If money is an issue, it might not be a bad idea to get your LVN and work while you do the bridge program to get your RN.

I agree with lifelongdream above. If you are single and money is an issue do the L.P.N first if not go for the RN. I used to think this way tell one of my girlfriends told me " it is about the peace you will have when you do the LPN first". I did that it was a very short trip with alot of pain but it is like labor . Now I 'm going back to fiinsh My prereq for RN but with no Rush. It is all about me now. GOOD luck

The two nursing jobs are not the same. While you may study many of the same things in an LPN program that are studied in an RN program it is what is done with the information that is very, very different. LPN, Licensed Practical Nurse, is just that--a physical worker. LPNs are taught to be followers. The RN, however, is the leader and manager of what goes on with patient care. We are the problem solvers. While LPNs may be taught about patient problems and how to identify them, they, in general, cannot initiate solutions without the approval of an RN. RNs supervise what an LPN does. Many of the LPNs I've worked with really get resentful of that. And, once you are out of school, working and getting a paycheck, it is hard to leave that to go back to being a student again. Working full time and going to RN school is not a smart idea. Even as an ADN nurse that went back for my BSN I had to cut my work down to weekend shifts only. I have worked with a number of LPNs who have gone back for their RNs and they come out of RN school changed individuals. It is because RN school really hammers critical thinking and leadership into you.

I would second going for the RN right away...many LPNs find it resentful that the RNs supervise them, even if the LPN has been around for many years...and some RNs are not as knowledgable....I had a resident with some rectal bleeding one day...and I found out that the next shift RN told the LPN in charge of that resident to call 911, put oxygen on her, have the crash cart ready, and send her out ASAP....I don't think the ox and the crash cart was needed...and the RN said, "well, she was bleeding!!!" yikes....

just go for it and then you have the supervisory license...
