gift for preceptor

Published

Each semester of school we gave gifts to our clinical instructor. Is it customary to do this for your preceptor as well? I know a lot of people dont have the same one for the whole time but I did and she was absolutely awesome. She made me feel so welcome and so confident. I hear all these horrible stories from people on the boards and from my classmates and I feel so blessed to have oriented with her.

Even if its not the custom I would like to get her something and write her a nice card. Is this even allowed? And if it is does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for replies...

Of course it is allowed. You are expressing appreciation.

In addition to your verbal thanks, a card, or card & small gift, would be totally appropriate.

I gave small gifts/cards while in school and also to my preceptor at my current job.

Good luck to you!

that is cool to have such a great experience.. I am not working in the field yet but I hope to soon. I have read bad stroies about preceptors on this site.

I did for those I worked with often..and I also did for the two I had when I started my first RN job.

It should not be anything big.

For my preceptor in my final, leadership rotation, I gave a gift card to the hospital coffee shop and a nice thank you note.

Hi Lindsey,

I had an awesome preceptor too. I gave her a nice card and a Willow Tree angel figurine. I wasn't sure whether to get her the "Thank you" angel or the "Angel of Caring." She truly is an "angel of caring" so that's the one I went with. I would want this woman as my nurse if I were sick & she sets a very good example for those around her.

I hope you get some good suggestions. I'm sure she'll appreciate whatever you pick out for her.

I am glad that you have found a preceptor that stood out and influenced you in a positive way.

During my orientation, I had 2 primary preceptors, and they were both great. I gave both of them a thank you card and a spa gift set as a token of my appreciation. It doesn't need to be grand or expensive. :D

Lindsey,

I was just at the mall yesterday and saw the cutest nurses christmas tree decoration. It was from one of those stands in the middle of the mall, but I've seen them a lot of the malls in my area around Christmas. Just at idea!

Good luck!
