Getting into Nursing School

Hello everybody!

This is my first time on allnurses and I'm wondering if anyone has advice on nursing schools in the southwest which have reasonable acceptance rates. I'm looking at all southern states.

I am a freshman and currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 after my first semester. I'm starting to worry that I won't be able to get into any schools with this GPA, I plan to retake Chemistry which I only received a C+ in so hopefully that will help to raise it.

I am planning on applying to many schools after I achieve the rest of my prerequisites. Any nursing school suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

You need to look at specific schools and how they calculate eligibility. My school considered the GPA of hard science classes, only. Nothing else mattered. Other schools give credit for healthcare experience, speaking a foreign language, impressive admission essays, high admission test scores, etc. Some schools won't consider retaken classes, and others will average both attempts instead of accepting the higher of the two grades. Some schools simply have minimum requirements and hand spaces out to anyone who meets them ...either by wait-list or a lottery system.

I would suggest you select a few "target" schools that seem the most attainable for you and work from that point. Do not torture yourself randomly.

First, please allow me to welcome you to AN.com, Davl160!

Secondly, I want to say that I admire your seeking of information before furthering your endeavor. Gathering data and planning is a righteous action!

Due to my geographical location, I'm sorry that I can't specifically help you, but Sour Lemon gave you some really good generic information.

As far as the chemistry class thing, I did not do really well in it either. Probably partially due to the fact that the instructor was a 24 year old who was going for his doctorate in organic chemistry. He knew his stuff, but did not know how to teach it.

Good luck to you, Davl160, and hey- don't be a stranger!
