Is it true that a person with a degree has a better chance getting into the nursing program?
If so, what are some degrees I should consider?

No. A degree in another field is not needed.Complete the prerequisites and get your GPA up as high as you can.
I've been told that it'll be best to get a degree then apply to the program so it won't be as if I'm wasting my time if i don't get into the nursing program.

Why would you waste money on a "back-up" degree? Very few schools give points for already having a degree, and honestly if you study and get good grades you should be able to get into nursing school. And if you don tget into the nursing program, you can major in some science field and all your pre req classes will just apply toward a degree. In either case, there is no need to waster your time and money getting a degree first.

There are accelerated BSN programs that require you to have a BS in another field. Those have less applicants due to the fact that you have to have a degree to apply, but there are also less of them compared to traditional programs and accept less students than traditional programs.

Why get a degree in something else just to make it "easier" to get in. I don't know where you live, but where I live that has nothing to do with getting in. Here, acceptance is solely based on GPA.

That would be an astronomical waste of money. I do have a previous BS, but that's because I didn't decide to be a nurse until working in another field for a while. I certainly wouldn't do it that way by choice.

Many times people that are starting fresh can work on keeping a perfect gpa...where as at times...people with coming back later or with previous degrees have old classes they took years ago that count against them now. It doesnt always work out for them. It isnt always the case but it happens a lot. Some colleges dont care if they messed up 10-20 years ago...they look at the entire gpa.
Best plan is for you to work as hard as you can to keep a high gpa and take the classes you need to advance on your path! I cant imagine going for a separate degree and spending extra money for nothing. Take your time getting the highest grades possible and you wont have any problems!
