Getting hired on probation

Published

I am an LVN in California. I just got my license reinstated on probation after being revoked for diversion of controlled substances and DUID. Who hires LVNs while on probation? This is very discouraging and I need advice on finding a job. I am regularly tested for alcohol and drugs among a million other parameters that the Board placed around me. Please help me. I am a good nurse, I just made a terrible mistake and jumped thru ALL the hoops to prove I am no longer an addict. HELP!!!

I'm sorry to say that most places required an active, UNEMCUMBERED license in order to be considered for employment. I'm not sure I would want to work for someone who would hire a person with an encumbered license, as the facility may be desperate for help due to deplorable working conditions. Sadly, it may be a case of 'beggars can't be choosers' for both parties. But, I'm sure you know or suspect this already.

The good news is that addiction is considered a disease, and there are good places willing to give someone a second chanced. However, as you are finding out, those good places are difficult to track down. I'm sorry you're in such a predicament. If I were you, if you haven't already, I'd go in with my hat in my hand and humbly plead my case, with the focus being on how hard a lesson that was to learn, but that it was definitely learned.

A great place to start is with trying to get a position in an alcohol & drug detox/recovery unit. If anyone will understand, it should be them. I've never taken a drink in my life. But when I worked at detox eons ago during my earlier LPN years, the majority of the staff, even the physician and some of the counsellors, were recovering alcoholics and/or addicts.

Good luck to you...
