I'm going to have to continue working full time during my LPN program, so I was thinking of trying to get ahead and front-load myself for success by getting a nursing fundamentals book from Half Price Books, or used on Amazon, and reading it while on the wait list. I will most likely be able to start in January, so I've got half a year. My thinking is that if the material is already familiar to me, I'm setting myself up to be able to earn higher grades because instead of it all being brand new it will look and feel more like review. Even if the book is not the same, the concepts will be, and I think it will lessen stress if I've seen it before.
Thankfully I'm in the float pool, so I'll be able to move my work days around as needed for school when I start.
Any recommendation for titles I should seek out? Ones I should avoid?

I feel the same, I want to get a head start as I am the mother of 3 little boys and a wife so I feel when it comes time to hit the books I want something there as a cushion so to speak. I hope someone will be able to recommend some good materials to start with that will help.

I too was thinking of doing this. I work full time, actually 6 days a week and will be starting my pre-reqs next semester in the fall. I am in my 40's and I think it would be beneficial to be familiar with some of the course work before starting the actual classes.

If you all go to my page here on all nurses , my "website" is linked to my blog about my entire lpn program at gateway. I have recommendations for books and such. Just buy any nclex study books to go over questions and start there. Nclex questions is where its at.
Nice! Thanks!

Ask the school for the books they will be using, that way you get the same book as your school. I'm starting in sep. too, that's what I did. Got my books cheap on amazon!
