Getting discouraged

Hi there...

I am starting to get a little discouraged. Let me give you a little background first.

I was a terrible student in undergrad. When I say terrible, I mean 2.4 terrible. I got my degree in marketing with as little effort as possible. After 4 years of selling pharmaceuticals, I decided I wanted to follow in my dads footsteps and become a CRNA.

I am in the process of finishing my science pre-reqs. I made an a in a&p I and microbiology. I am currently taking a&p II and chemistry. I will also have to retake speech because I got a D in there (when I say terrible, I mean terrible).

Here is where I am getting discouraged. First of all, I made a C on my second A&P test. If I can't ace these easy undergrad courses, how in the heck I am going to get good grades in nursing school or especially CRNA school?

Most of my discouragement is stemming from my poor performance in undergrad the first time around. There is no question in my mind if I would have applied myself, I could have graduated with a 3.75 or so. I have heard you can be accepted into TWU's program just based on your nursing school grades (last 60 hours), or your core science classes. How realistic is this? Are they going to look at my terrible performance my first go-round and automatically disregard me despite the fact my grades have been good since?

Sorry it was long and thanks for any insight.

Don't stress about the past. Work hard and move forward. My GPA in my first 2 years of university was 2.0. I applied myself and have done fine ever since. When I applied to CRNA school, not one school even mentioned my poor performance in undergrad. I kicked butt in my diploma program and BSN and thats all anyone cared about.

Also, since when has A&P been easy? Just because it is an undergrad course does not make it easy! It was hard! So are the other undergrad science courses...they are hard! Graduate school is actually much easier in some ways than undergrad, IMO. Don't worry about a "C", just do better from now on. You will always bomb some exams along the way (even in CRNA school), you just have to brush yourself off and move on. Best of luck.

For stuff like A&P it is empirical and much easier to attain a higher grade if you read the book. When I was an undergrad i must have read the whole Marieb text 3 times and many parts (for reivision) numerous times. If you have trouble understanding anything in "dry" subjects like this get yourself into a study group and you will find that each member has their own strengths which they can share to help the group's knowledge overall. Good Luck!

Just writing to let you know your not alone. I am going through the same thing. My college grades were good but I have to take the GRE for the program I want and I am terrible at those kinds of tests. I am trying to prepare, but it is so hard with working, taking care of my sick mom and taking three prereqs. I am having a hard time with Anatomy too. There's is so much to know and the professor is so useless he might as well not be there. The hardest part is that I am working so hard now and I don't even know if I will get in. I am afraid it will be for nothing. Do you have that fear? I just keep telling myself that there are a lot of programs out there and there has to be something that will fit my skills as well as my faults. I am sure the same goes for you. Just don't get up. I truely believe there is a way. As for your fears about grades once you get in, I wouldn't. If you can do well enough to get in then I am sure you can do well once you are there and you will probably be in a much more structured environment. Good luck!

Don't let one lousy test score slow you down. You have many, many more courses in which to do well. Personally I had a C+ in the second semester of A&P, but I'm applying right now. I'm hoping my work experience, good GREs, other good grades, etc will override that bad one. I don't know if I'll be successful but I have been offered one interview so fae, so they didn't laugh my application out of the builiding.

I think the schools will have minimal interest in your marketing degree. You can say honestly that you were young and foolish, without direction, and have now committed to a career as evidenced by good nursing and science grades.
