For those of you working nights

Published

Hi guys, I've recently been hired as a Nurse Tech at a large 1100 bed hospital into a Neuro-Trauma SICU.

It will be part time nights and I am enrolled in a BSN program as a full time student.

My schedule for a normal week is :

M- class

T- class

W- empty

Th- clinical

F- clinical

S- empty

Su- church

My question to those of you who are working nights, what nights should I work?

Any tips on making my schedule very tight and well balanced?

PS:I am used to working day shifts (once a week shift) and that I love to sleep lol

Thanks!

Are you being offered a choice in making your schedule? If so, then at least avoid the nights before and after clinical. My employer stopped accommodating my request regarding school. I just learned to make sure my recorder was operational on those days that I felt drowsy in class.

Forgot to mention, they said they are willing to work with my school schedule. I will be the only Nurse Tech on the floor per shift. They even mentioned that Nurse techs are expensive to train and they have to make sure they picked the right person (to basically hire them once they graduate). Do you think Friday night is doable even though it's after my clinical?

I have a part-time night shift position on a surgical floor. I gave my manager plenty of notice and they're letting me work Friday and Saturday nights, 1830-0700. Last term I had school in the mornings from 0800-1300 (at the latest) Tuesday through Friday. I'd catnap Friday after class and then go to work. I would spend my Sundays switching my clock back to days in time for class on Tuesday. This term I have clinicals on Tuesday and all my other classes are on Wednesday and Thursday.

It's exhausting at times, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Clinicals are tiring enough as it is. It's essentially a job of itself! I personally wouldn't work after clinicals.

So what days would you say i should work? I planned on working tues night after class (nap for 1.5 hour) then Friday night (nap after clinical, my clinical is 10 min away so i'll be home by 4). then switch the schedule back to normal schedule on sunday
