For those offered a position before graduating

I don't know of any unit in my hospital that has made an offer like this in the last 3-4 years. You'll have to ask your classmates.

I was hired into my current position before I graduated. I worked there the summer before as a student.

I interviewed with the manager of the unit where I did my final placement while I was still a student and was offered a position there starting after my graduation. I brought a hard copy of my resume and spoke to the manager. We did an informal interview during one of my clinical days and he spoke to my preceptor.

I noticed a lot of people claim to have been offered a job before even completing their final semester. Can anyone tell me how that works. Do you still have to send in your resume? Do you give them your references after they already offered you the position? Sounds like a silly question, but I'm just curious. How many of you have been offered a position before graduating from school? And why were you offered the position before you even graduated? Was it because of excellent clinical performance, or high grades?

Many of my classmates, including myself, were offered a job by the manager on the floor they completed their final preceptorship on. We still had to go through the online application process, screening call, reference checks - but essentially, instead of them passing your resume onto the manager of the posted position, they specifically handed it to the manager of your unit. An interview was still required, and still had to wait for that phone call with the job offer :) It's basically just that you've made a contact in the process (Vs. you submitting your resume and nobody passes it on for an interview), but the process is still almost the same! I assumed that we were all offered jobs due to performance, as none of the managers knew our grades (that I knew of) - they talked to our preceptors, other nurses on the ward, etc. Although of course grades are still important!

As noted by others, many students in my class got positions on units they did one of their practicums on. They made sure the unit manager knew who they were and that they were interested in staying on the unit to work. The manager could then discuss whether they would be suitable with the preceptor and other staff who had worked with the student. Managers here are able to create four month temporary full time lines especially for grad nurses, which can then become permanent if the grad nurse works out.

I however got a job through the resume process on a unit I had no experience with. I was phoned by the manager of said unit and we did a phone interview while I was in my rural practicum. I don't know if she called my references or not, but I had them in place long before I graduated. I was also already an employee of the health region. The process in our health region is to go through HR if you don't already have some standing agreement with a manager on a particular unit. HR came and spoke to us as we began our last semester and encouraged us to get our resumes out a few months before grad so they could try to place us. We were able to speak to the HR reps so we knew them. We were also encouraged to let them know where we were interested in working or if we wanted to go somewhere we had been as students. They then circulated our resumes to the appropriate managers, who called us.

My preceptor recommended me to the unit manager, along with her other student during our consolidation. We spoke with the unit manager separately, and basically we were hired pending reference checks. Soon after, the facility was closing beds, and no new grads were hired for an entire year on that floor. They were laying people off. I decided to leave the Province for a job, and I haven't been back.
