For those who moved out from OR

What made you finally say that..."Hey I do not belong here. OR is not my place".

I am still a probationary nurse in the OR, and after spending few months here, I'm thinking that I am more on bedside nursing. I can compare my work, as well as my performance, because during my 3-month training in my hospital now before I was hired, was totally on bedside nursing(Med/Surg floors). My first month of probation was also on bedside nursing & it was on the 2nd month when the nursing service dept transferred me to OR. Right now, I'm still deciding whether or not to transfer. Just want to hear you own personal experiences. Thanks!!!

I love the OR but it is not for everyone. There is little in the way of patient nuturing in a traditional sense. Many surgeons act like spoiled 2 year olds. The ever expanding technology can be mind boggling. If you are not fascinated by what is going on around you, perhaps another specialty would be in order.

I have not left the OR, but I have been a preceptor for many years.

It sounds like you were transferred to the OR and not asked to transfer.

The OR can be overwhelming. It is not for everyone. If after a few months, you still have doubts, maybe the OR is not your nitch. Even if you decide to move on, think of all the things you have learned. Many times, there is poor communication between the nursing units and the OR. Perhaps you could use your knowledge to bridge these gaps.
