FNP or something else??

About me: 27 (next month!) engaged with no children and living together

Nursing Background: was a CNA before and throughout LVN school, LVN for 2 years, currently an RN in a hospital

I'm expecting to graduate January 2016 with my BSN and am torn between NP school or completing requirements for medical school. I know I want to be a provider and LOVED my rotation in the clinic following an NP.

I'm young enough that the DNP for NP will affect me if required but I know it doesn't provide a greater scope of practice. My fiance says he'll support my decision either way, but is hinting he wants to parent/be a father already.

My heart is telling me medical school but my brain says for all practicality NP school as it's shorter and I can practice sooner which means quality time with our future child instead of towing them around while I'm in medical school. But then again I'd rather be 40 and just finishing medical school than 40 and still wondering!

What would you do? Please advise!

There are so many factors to consider it is staggering. In the end you and only you know what will truest make you happy and the rest is a moot point.

From an outside perspective (and making some assumptions about you, so pardon me if they are inaccurate). If your sights are set on medical school you should do it. That being said I would venture that getting into medical school (domestic) would be quite difficult for you.

You would need a slew of pre-req courses that your nursing education does not cover.

You may have some difficulty with your ed path and med school admission.

If you plan on the shortest residency you're looking at at least another nine or ten years.

There are things you can do with an MD you can't do with an NP. If you want to be a surgeon then MD is the only path for you. If you want to do primary care you are (likely) are better off going NP which would mean only another 4 years max.

You can work as a RN and get your NP and still have a family life. You would sacrifice most of that to do medical school, including debt.
