First Job Offer

I just accepted my first job offer. I feel very lucky to have a job but I hate the one that I got. Its a full time night position on a VERY busy unit (nurse:patient ratio as high as 1:9!). I am so stressed not just about the amount of patients I will have, but about working nights in general. I do not function well on lack of sleep and without social interactions (I get very sad when I am unable to spend time with loved ones) and am so worried I wont be able to last because of this. Anyway, I just noticed a job posting on the unit I was just hired to for full time DAYS! This position was not there when I applied. Is there a way I would be able to switch to this open position? Who do I speak to? HR? Or the nurse manager? I begin orientation next week and start by orienting on days 2 weeks later. I don't want to wait until I'm on the unit to bring it up though because the position may be filled by then.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Speak to the manager immediately. Hopefully, the position may still be available. Usually, some hospitals will post positions (union requirement) even though it has already been filled.

Good luck.

Many new grads fear working nights because they don't know anything about it. We all fear the unknown. I'm not saying you shouldn't try for that day position, but if you don't get it... just wanted to let you know that nights is not scary. It's usually much easier to cope with than the busy chaos of day shift. Much more opportunity to actually interact with your patients as there are far fewer interruptions.

Best of luck to you & congrats on landing that very important first job!
