Finding own housing in NYC

Published

Has anyone on here found their OWN housing in New York City for a travel assignment? If so, I am interested in hearing about whether you used craigslist, airbnb, etc.

I have found great threads on here about travelers finding their own housing, but can't seem to find one that pertains specifically to New York. (Finding housing in NY is a little bit of a nightmare at times). I am considering doing an 8 week contract in the Bronx (have worked there before three times), but want to find my own housing this time. The place my agency houses at is at a hotel in Yonkers, and I'd rather be in Manhattan, even if it means finding a roommate.

Not NYC - but my sister traveled a time ago. One time she used a realtor for assist in the search. She had housing that had been set up by her agency, but she didn't like the accommodations. She liked the facility and wanted to continue. So she went thru a realtor someone recommended.

I just came from an assignment in the Bronx. I used Craigslist to sublet an apartment in Washington Heights, 163rd and Riverside. Nice river views and only about a 20 minute drive to my facility. Also located right near the train to go downtown. Airbnb will probably be very expensive. I would go through Craigslist and sublet.com.

Tell your recruiter you will go only if you can get an apartment. Fastaff houses some of the travelers in apartments. Call travel and housing and ask them when an apartment will be available. I stayed in my apartment for 4 months...right off the hudson river with a train that goes directly to Grand Central Station just a few feet away from me door step.

The BEST website you should use for finding housing in NYC is streeteasy.com. You can search what area of Manhattan, price range, furnished, amenities, etc. Check it out! I've already found some places in my price range. I'll be there starting sometime in July hopefully.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the great advice.
