Did you actually apply for a student loan in addition to the Pell grant?

Not knowing from your post - There is a seperate form that has to be filled out and the student loan is made by a private lender and not by the government as is the Pell grant

Being two seperate things entirely, they also have a seperate process they go through and it can take a different amount of time for each to be processed

When you filled out your fasfa, there was an area that asked if you wanted to take out student loans. What did you put there? If you put "yes", your FAA should be there to take you on that "journey".

On the FAFSA you have to check the "interested in loans" as well as "work study" boxes. Could you have maybe overlooked that? It should have been on your award letter yes. But it shouldn't be to late, if you applied online go and do a correction and send it back in ASAP. Usually the loans dont take very long to get at all.

Ahhhh - guess I went a entirely different route with mine - I let the school take care of it all lol

Don't feel bad, I applied for a student loan through my school and never heard anything from them. I tried to call several times before the semester started and couldn't get through and the lines were crazy so I ended up putting my tuition and books on my credit card.

I will get up there in the next few weeks as it begins to calm down to find out what happened. I wish I had applied on my own through my credit union.

I think the schools get so busy that they just can't get everything correct.

I got turned down for a Pell grant, got a Higher Education Grant from WV. I went Thursday to pick up the $$ from the financial aid office only to be told that I didn't qualify for the HEG because I am only taking 9 credit hours. I didn't read the fine print:(, But they sent me in to talk to the FAA and he found out that I qualified for a HEG as a part time student and that because of my husband's illness being the cause for me to have so many credit hours (total) and that I had to withdraw and even failed one semester and had to repeat them. The FAA had me to write a letter explaining all this and I ended up getting my tuition paid for plus $200 Pell grant. It's hard to believe that the higher ed. grant would only allow a full time student $567 and the part-time student $760 (I just don't understand the system, I guess). Anyway I came out of the office one happy nursing student with a few extra $$ in my pocket. :)

Boy Did I get a SHOCK Thursday!! My award letter said I got 3800.00 for the yr. Cool

I went to my nursing advisor and asked for the list of books I NEED for the first few weeks of school. I needed 3 books and my sylibi [2]. I borrowed two books from my advisor and another instructor and paid 61.00 for 1 book and my 2 sylibi. One of them is 2 1/2 inches thick!! It costs 23.00!! The other one was an inch thick and cost 5.00.

I also had to buy my daughter's school suplies and mine. I will get the balance of my tuition paid gradually, just as I will my books. NOTHING is going to stop me from becoming a nurse! As my signature says FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!!!

because i did do it online and i did check yes that i was interested in loans so now i don't understand what the problem could be? guess i will be on the phone monday with the school. Hope i can get this figured out or i don't see any way i can go now.

Usually you have to apply for loans also. Was this your award letter from finaid? Is this for an ADN or BSN? Usually you can take a huge amount of federal loans. My full tuition ($26K) is paid through a hospital scholarship, I'm on my second B.S. degree, have "old" student loans, and have still taken nearly $15K in loans this year. There *has* to be a way for you to get this $$$. Unfortunately, all financial aid offices are not equal and the service at some schools...well, it just plain sucks. Call and call and call and keep calling until you can figure out what to do. In the meantime, being the weekend...check to see if the finaid office has a link on the school's website. It will often give all the info you need for applying for the various kinds of aid.

Two of my four kids bought used books and saved hundreds of dollars. I told them to check the student union. Might want to try that.
