Hello to all. I have not been on too much for the last 9 months. But, THANK GOODNESS TO BE BACK!!!! I have missed this site very much. I went back to school and will graduate from the ADN program in 2 weeks- thank goodness for that as well.

Now here's the question--- I worked in LTC for the last 3 years. I started as a CNA, then worked there as a LPN, and I'm still there on weekends. But, I have an interview with a local hospital for positions in the ER and on the surgical floor. ER really interests me and they have a great orientation/preceptor program, but I am TERRIFIED. Let me get some opinions from you all as to whether I should start my journey as a RN in ER or on the surgical floor. I just want too be sure I'm not taking too big of a jump if I go straight to the ER.

Thanks to All----- Angi

My three cents worth? Go to the surgical floor. IMHO, going straight from LTC to ER would be too big of a culture shock, for me anyway.

On the other hand, if you're sick of LTC and looking for something to get your adrenalin pumping and your nursing interest revived, it may be just the thing.

However, if it were me, which it isn't, I would go to the surgical floor.

Good luck, hope you get the job!!!!

I'm all for new grads going into the area they have a passion for. But if you are truly undecided and think you'd like the surgical floor that is probably your best bet. But don't let your fears get the best of you, if ER is what your goal is, then go for it. If up in the air, then the surgical floor. My two cents. :)

Thanks. I really do want the ER position, I'm just nervous about changing areas of practice I guess. I'm not sure really what I will do. If they offer both jobs, I'll probably take the ER position and just hold on tight! I really am burned out on repetitive nursing. Just unsure how the ER nurses feel about new grads coming in that area.

Thanks again, Angi
