Extra shift bonus?

Hi!

I have a good O/T rate but I have a q. Has anyone negotiated an extra shift bonus when staffing is low? The hospital I am at now just started offering $1000/shift extra to staff. The amazing thing is they have excellent ratios. 1:1 or 2, rarely 3 in NICU.

for Feb/march they had "code yellow" for staffing $500/shift.

Thanks.

What a hospital can pay staff is unlimited. An agency has an all inclusive bill rate so they can't go beyond that.

The hospital in question clearly wants to maintain their excellent staffing ratios so they are incentivizing the staff when they have a call off. This is cheaper than hiring a new staff nurse or traveler full time when just a couple shifts are needed. It is a common practice at DC area hospitals (just about adequate staffing there, not great ratios).

What is your OT rate? Unless it is over $50 an hour, you may actually be getting a drop in pay from your regular hours that include housing and per diem. There are now several agencies including large ones like Supplemental and Emerald that do pay extra shift bonuses to get the effective overtime in the right neighborhood. A clunky method but better than nothing.

Which hospital is this and where can I sign up??
