Effects of Steroids

Can one of you smart nurses help explain to me, how exactly does steroids and alcohol cause depression and other ill-side effects amongst its users?

I have a family member who is on steroids and is also an alcoholic... and I would like to explain to him what exactly these drugs are doing to his body.

I know the common side-effects of alcohol and steroids, so please don't waste your time telling me: steroids causes cancer or it can shrink your sexual organs, yadda yadda. I would just like to know how these drugs affect the brain and cause the depression,roid rage, etc... Any info you can share would be great- Thanks!
