Im a full time Fireman/Paramedic in the Chicago suburbs. I currently am looking to get my ADN but I just dont think I can swing making all the classes even with shift trades and vacation time at work. I think it would be a great part time job. I talked to EC and was told if I work in Indiana or Wisconsin for 2 years and/or 1500 hours I can apply for reciprocity and get my RN license in Illinois. Has anyone had to deal with this or heard of it? Has anyone heard of anyone being denied by Illinois? Im just scared I would have to drive 50 miles each way for a part time job for the next 40 years. Any and all information is appreciated. Thank you.

I haven't heard of anyone being denied, and I would think that as long as you meet the requirements as outlined by the Illinois Board of Nursing (BON), you should be good to go. I'd contact the Illinois BON for your own peace of mind, though.

50 miles that is no problem. Plus you should be getting paid well enough to make it worth it.

Don't make any decisions until you contact the Illinois board. Keep in mind that you have to also consider the time frame because Illinois can always change the way they deal, and there is no guarantee that they would grandfather your individual situation.

I'm an EC student from Chicago and I am doing the same thing. I live 5 minutes from Northwest Indiana so after 2 years or 1500 hours I plan to apply for my Illinois license. I have been on the IL BON website and it is pretty much outlined there about what type of setting you can work in for your RN experience to count ( has to be acute care) also they have work verification and endorsement application online. I called the BON and I was directed to the website where I pretty much found out everything I needed. But as the other posters said contact the IL BON for yourself and Good luck to you !!
