hi, i am a 1st year nursing student and am considering training as a doula (birth assisstant), does anyone no if this is popular in australia, where the best place is to train(i am in qld)? and wether it may help me to get into midwifery once i am a RN? and also is it likely to make much money?
it would be great to get any advice, or hear from any other doulas out there,
thanks

Hi kj - welcome to allnurses :)
I don't know nothing about birthing no babies, but good luck.

Ditto this for me!! But before I went too far I would look at the Australian College of Midwives and get thier input. Midwifery in Australia is very different to the USA and more along the British lines.
I am not sure about Doulas here but in general an independant midwife here has a great deal of autonomy BUT from talking with colleagues to be an independant you need two VERY important things
1) Insurance - difficult and worth talking to the QNU about
2) Medicare provider number
And the latter is no easy task.

well, i know about birthing babies! did it twice! :) that was enough for me! :redlight:
as for a 'doula'???? never heard of it, ever! well, not in australia anyway. as gwenith says, independent midwives operate here in oz and you need to train to be a midwife and be registered.
best wishes with your studies!
