Doctors' Hell

This was told to me by a doc I used to work with and I find it very true...

So a doctor dies and goes to hell and the devil says, "Welcome to hell. You get your choice of torture...door #1 or door#2. I will show you both and then you choose."

Behind door #1 is an ICU full of coding patients with every alarm imaginable going off. Doc says, "No, don't want that one." Behind door #2 is an office full of charts to sign off, dictations to be done, and mounds of other paperwork. He says, "Nope, don't want that one either. Hey, what's behind that other door over there?"

The devil opens it and there are all these docs being followed around by nurses writing down everything they say, making them coffee, and generally worshiping the ground they walk on. The doc says, "I think I want to stay in here."

Devil says, (can you see it coming??), "Nope, can't do that. This is nurses' hell."

Thank god it was before my time - I would have strangled myself if I had to do that. Isn't it amazing how far nursing has come, even just in your time?(you are not old!)

No, sorry to say. We stopped what we were doing, stood up and looked attentive. We said, "Yes, sir." My class was the last class to get caps and wear them. I personally loved the cap and still wish we wore it, but I know a lot of people feel it is a symbol of oppression and subservience.

One of the old docs used to pitch bloody instruments at us and when we complained, he told us he never threw anything sharp, so what was our problem?

Another doc, much younger than most of us, angrily told his junior that "These nurses don't know sh#t" right in our hearing. This was after some nurse had saved his butt telling him what to do with a very sick patient.

Early one morning, an attending doctor was angry we hadn't called him in time to deliver his patient, stood in the hall and announced "This makes me want to go home and get my .45."

I know we complain about docs nowadays, but these young ones are so much more respectful than the majority of the old ones.

hey, i've gotten doc's coffee before - but only because i wanted to - if i knew that they'd had a particularly rough day or something, and if we had food on the unit, i'd invite them to share.

i was generally the 'old mom' on the unit.

I did not get them coffee, but out of respect I still stand up and let them sit.
